‘The study of geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. It’s about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exist across continents.ย And in the end, it’s about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together’ – Barack Obama.
From September 2023, our Geography curriculum has been designed with a focus on the Geography of the UK and the ability to place this in a worldwide context. We aim to give our children a high quality curriculum that allows them to have an understanding of:
o Location and place using mapping
o continuity and change over time
o similarities and differences within the local area, regions, countries and continents
o use of data sources and their place in a wider narrative.
The intent of our Geography curriculum is first and foremost to promote an appreciation of how the world around us is shaped and our role in this. We will provide a strong world overview, placing the UK within this, and for children to feel they can discuss this with confidence and knowledge. We focus on developing the geographical skills, knowledge and understanding to enable children to become critical thinkers about our world. As a school, we have chosen to base our curriculum around our role in the world, to give children a deep understanding of the world around them and the interrelatedness of people and events. Children will respect and appreciate how human activity and physical changes impact the world that they experience now.
Children will develop the geographical skills of mapping and looking at scale, following common themes across places/ cultures/ societies, using evidence to support their thinking and discussing this evidence using geographical vocabulary. They will develop an understanding of the physical and human context of developments across the world including climate, settlement, trade and sustainability.
