‘The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future’ – Theodore Roosevelt.
From September 2023, our History curriculum has been designed with a focus on knowledge of British History and the ability to place this in a worldwide context. We aim to give our children a high quality curriculum that allows them to have an understanding of:
- chronology
- use of sources and their place in a wider narrative
- continuity and change over time
- similarities and differences from the past to our world now, and the impact of one upon the other.
The intent of our history curriculum is first and foremost to promote an appreciation of how the past shapes and influences our world and for children to feel they can discuss this with confidence and knowledge. We focus on developing the historical skills, knowledge and understanding to enable children to become critical thinkers about our world. As a school, we have chosen to base our curriculum around chronology, to give children a deep understanding of the passage of time and the placement of significant people and events. Children will respect and appreciate how each time period has impacted the world that they experience now.
Children will develop the historical skills of ordering time and looking at concurrence, following common themes across events/ time periods/ civilisations, using evidence to support their thinking and discussing this evidence using historical vocabulary. They will develop an understanding of the history and cultural context of developments in society including significant figures, rule, class, settlement, trade, beliefs, conflict and culture.
The curriculum will also develop transferrable skills such as team-work, leadership, creative thinking, problem solving, decision making and presentation and performance skills. These are vital skills and will help children to develop as positive citizens as they work within our core values of:
Community
Kindness
Respect
Independence
Resilience
Positivity
Excellence
Enjoyment
The curriculum in place for History ensures pupils meet the end of Key Stage Attainment targets as outlined in the National Curriculum.
