‘A different language is a different vision of life’ – Federico Fellini.
From September 2023, our MFL curriculum has been designed using Language Angels. The curriculum ensures children have high quality learning in Spanish. We have chosen to teach Spanish as our feeder schools teacher a wide range of languages including Spanish, German and French. Historically, a mixture of languages has been taught and our new curriculum will ensure a clear focus.
We have chosen to use Language Angels. We chose this as it has a clear curriculum progression and lesson structure for non-specialist teachers and also supports with the implementation of phonics and grammar teaching within MFL. Our Long Term plan identifies the new language taught as well as that revisited from prior units – this is planned progressively. Although formal teaching of Spanish starts in Year 3, Language Angels offers small units of learning (cross-curricular) which enables learners in EY and KS1 to begin to experience Spanish within their own learning.
By teaching Spanish, we are supporting our pupils to be polite to other learners. Many of our children visit Spanish speaking countries on holiday and we hope they will begin to use their new found language to engage positively with the local communities. Learning a new language helps children to develop their confidence and resilience as they have a go and learning from mistakes – languages provide the same starting point for all children. Most of all. we want all children to enjoy learning a new language and about new cultures developing tolerance and respect for others.
For the academic year 2023-24, all children will start with the Year 3 curriculum as Spanish is a new language being taught. It is envisaged that, by academic year 25/26, children in Year 6 will have made expected progress and reach the end of KS expectations for Spanish.
