‘The only one who can tell you ‘you cannot win’ is you and you don’t have to listen’ – Jessica Ennis-Hill.
At Thornley Primary School, P.E is an integral part of the school curriculum. We aim to provide an enjoyable and balanced programme that develops competitive games alongside creative and fundamental aspects of movement and physical expression. We will provide every child with the opportunity to take part in physical activity regularly, through lessons and curriculum enrichment, in the hope that this will help them to become more active, more aware of their fitness and more confident. We want our pupils to have fun, learn to work as a team player, explore different sports and develop a love of activity that continues throughout their lives. We recognise the value of physical development on raising self-esteem and resilience, right from our youngest children at two through to leaving us at eleven.
Our PE curriculum is developed to ensure that all National Curriculum objectives are covered, with sequenced units to ensure progression of knowledge and skills and also to ensure that children have the opportunity to experience a wide range of sports. With extensive support from the Easington School Sport Partnership, children will develop their skills and understanding of team games (e.g. football, tag rugby, hockey netball and cricket), as well as Athletics, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities, Dance and Gymnastics. Within PE lessons, children are provided with the opportunity to develop a wide range of abilities; cognitive, health and fitness, personal, social, physical and creative skills. Within these, our main focus is improving agility, balance and coordination. Children are given the opportunity to further develop their skills in competitions and after school clubs that focus on specific sports which are provided by teachers and external coaches.
